Responding to the pressing healthcare needs of the tribal heartland of Chotanagpur, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) took a historic decision during its 2008 General Body Meeting in Jamshedpur to establish a Medical College and Hospital in Ranchi. At the invitation of His Eminence Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo, then Vice-President of the CBCI, the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales were invited to collaborate in this noble mission.
Though initially extended to the entire Congregation, the project was accepted in 2014 by the North East India Province at the request of the Superior General. On June 3, 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the North East India Province of the MSFS, represented by Fr George Panthanmackel (Provincial), and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, represented by His Eminence Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos. Through this agreement, the administration of the Medical College Project was entrusted to the North East India Province of the MSFS for 25 years, with a renewable clause.
In its first phase, the project includes the construction of a 500-bed hospital, Medical College, Nursing College, hostel facilities, and other ancillary units. Today, the Carmel Life Hospital and Research Centre (CLHRC) stands equipped with advanced medical facilities such as NICU, ICU, USG, and Digital X-Ray. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has been refurbished, and the ICU, operation theatre, and X-ray room are fully operational. Modern medical equipment and a centralized oxygen gas line ensure efficient patient care.
The hospital also provides a full-time canteen for patients and attendants, comprehensive security systems with night-vision cameras, and regular rural health camps and outreach programmes extending care to remote areas.
