MSFS Provincialate – Guwahati
The MSFS Provincialate in Guwahati serves as the administrative and pastoral centre of the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales in the Guwahati Province.
When the MSFS missionaries arrived in Northeast India in 1975, Guwahati was under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Shillong, led by Hubert D’Rosario. Later, on August 1, 1995, the Archdiocese of Guwahati was officially erected, and Thomas Menamparampil became its first Archbishop.
Early Residences
The first residence of the MSFS in Guwahati was SFS Bhavan, Karguli, which was later followed by SFS Bhavan, Dispur. As the mission expanded and the number of priests increased, the need for a larger and more suitable Provincial House became evident.
Construction of the Provincial House
Between 1990 and 1996, the Province witnessed significant growth with the ordination of several new priests and the opening of new mission centres. This development prompted the search for a spacious Provincial House in Guwahati.
The search began in 1995 and was successfully completed in 1996, during the tenure of Fr. George Parampukattil as Provincial. Construction of the new Provincial House began the same year and was completed in 1998.
The building was inaugurated and blessed on October 24, 1998 by the Superior General Emile Mayoraz. The new residence was named MSFS Provincialate, and Fr. George Parampukattil, along with the Provincial Bursar Fr. Jose Thekkel, moved into the house on the same day.
Centre of Formation and Ministry
Soon after its inauguration, the Provincialate became an important centre for various activities of the Province. From March 8–11, 1999, the Provincial Congress was held at the Provincialate. Since then, the house has hosted numerous retreats, renewal programmes, and formation sessions for priests and religious.
The facility has also been widely used by different groups and organizations for meetings, seminars, and spiritual programmes.
A Hub of Provincial Ministries
Today, the MSFS Provincialate in Guwahati houses several important offices and ministries of the Province, including:
Office of the Provincial
FAsCE India (Fransalian Agency for Social Care and Education in India)
Fransalian Youth Mission Office
Fransalian Media and Communication Centre
Parish Priest’s Office
In 2005, FAsCE India began its activities with a room in the Provincial House serving as its office. Later, with the intention of upgrading the school and expanding future facilities, the administration acquired an additional five acres of land adjacent to the existing property, which was later developed to support further constructions.
Today, the Provincialate stands as the heart of administration, pastoral coordination, and missionary initiatives of the MSFS in Northeast India, supporting various ministries that serve the Church and society.
