Fransalian Youth Mission (FYM)

Youth Ministry of the MSFS Guwahati Province

Fransalian Youth Mission (FYM) is the youth ministry of the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales in Northeast India. Ministry to the youth is an important charism of the Congregation, inspired by the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales and the missionary vision of Peter Marie Mermier.

The social realities of Northeast India—such as ethnic conflicts, violence, militancy, corruption, and unemployment—have often left many young people discouraged about their present and future. Responding to this situation, the Province initiated a dedicated ministry to accompany, guide, and empower young people.

Foundation of FYM

In November 1998, Fr. Jimmy Mathirampuzha was appointed as the first Director of Fransalian Youth Mission, with the inspiring motto:

“Live Love: Give Jesus.”

The mission of FYM is to bring about transformation in the lives of young people and thereby contribute to building a better society.

Target Groups

FYM reaches out to various groups of youth, including:

  • School and college students

  • Catholic Youth Associations

  • School dropouts

  • Unemployed youth

  • Disillusioned and demoralized youth

  • Working youth

Through pastoral accompaniment and leadership formation, FYM helps young people discover their potential and develop a positive vision for life.

Youth Apostolate

Since its beginning, the Province has dedicated priests specifically for youth ministry. Among those who have served in this apostolate are:

  • Fr. Jimmy Mathirampuzha

  • Fr. John Barman

  • Fr. Milikius Tirky

  • Fr. Ronesh Narzary

Fr. John Barman was appointed Director of FYM on July 19, 2014, continuing the mission of strengthening youth engagement across the region.

Activities and Programmes

FYM organizes a wide range of programmes aimed at the holistic development of young people, including:

  • Youth camps and leadership training programmes

  • Awareness and animation programmes

  • Career guidance and self-employment initiatives

  • Teachers’ training programmes

  • Youth retreats and faith formation

  • Evangelization through music ministry

  • Music coaching classes

Youth for Peace Building

In collaboration with FAsCE India, FYM launched the “Youth for Peace Building” initiative. This programme trains young volunteers as peace ambassadors and has established Peace Clubs in several mission parishes across Northeast India.

Organisational Structure

FYM functions through a coordinated network of youth leaders across the Province. There are eight Regional Youth Directors (RYD) serving different regions:

  • Arunachal Mission

  • Khasi Hills

  • Garo Hills

  • Upper Assam

  • Lower Assam

  • Nagaland

  • Mizoram

  • Manipur

In addition, Local Youth Directors (LYD)—usually parish priests—coordinate youth activities at the parish level. Together, they work in collaboration to guide and empower young people toward building a more just and peaceful society.

FYM also publishes a newsletter for the Fransalian Youth Wing, keeping young members connected with the mission and activities of the ministry.
